The Lake covers 1,520 surface acres at 440 feet mean sea level and has over twelve miles of shoreline. As well as being fed by creeks and rainfall run-off, Lake Athens contains a number of springs that help maintain the consistently clear complexion of the water. It has been regarded for years as one of the premier fishing lakes in Texas. Numerous species of bass, crappie, catfish, and perch are abundant. The largest bass caught to date weighed 14 pounds and 3 ounces and measured 27.6 inches in length. The fish was caught on a grape colored plastic worm while wading from the shore near the marina.
